Coordinating care among siblings who don't agree

Caring for an aging parent can bring siblings closer β€” or surface every old tension between them. Disagreements about how to care, who should do what, and who's doing too little or too much are some of the most common and painful conflicts families face. The disagreements are rarely really about medicines or schedules; they're about fairness, guilt, old roles, and love expressed in different ways. Why siblings clash over care

Left unspoken, this imbalance curdles into resentment on one side and defensiveness on the other. Naming it openly, without blame, is the first step to defusing it.

The practical fix is to give distant siblings real, ownable responsibilities rather than vague guilt. Plenty can be done from afar: managing finances and paperwork, researching options, ordering and tracking refills, coordinating appointments by phone, and taking a share of the on-call duty so the local sibling gets genuine breaks. When everyone contributes something concrete and visible, the local caregiver feels supported and the distant ones feel useful β€” and the resentment that poisons so many sibling relationships has far less room to grow.
